We want to alert you to an urgent public hearing being held by the Washington state Senate in Olympia about I-522 to label genetically engineered foods. Last week, Senator Brian Hatfield, D-Raymond, the chair of the Senate Agriculture committee, called for public testimony on I-522 or “The People’s Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act” with less than a week's notice.
The meeting will be held tomorrow on Valentine’s Day: February 14, in Senate Hearing Room 4, J.A. Cherberg Building, Olympia, WA at 10:00 am. Click here to RSVP if you’d like to attend.
We need your help today: contact your Washington state Senator and Representative to tell them that you support I-522 because you have a Right to Know what’s in your food!
Already resistance to common sense labeling of genetically engineered foods is beginning to rear its ugly head across Washington as the biotech industry starts its predictable misinformation campaign.
This week, the biotech lobbyists have managed to convince commodity wheat growers to come out against labeling of genetically engineered foods, despite the fact that no GMO wheat is not currently on the market and not expected for another 10 to 15 years.
Right now labeling genetically engineered foods is urgent.
At the moment, 13 new GMO crops are awaiting approval at the USDA, including 2,4-D Agent Orange corn and the “Botox” GMO apple. At the same time, the FDA is getting ready to approve genetically engineered salmon. If approved, AquaBounty’s GMO salmon would be the first genetically engineered animal allowed on the market and it would appear on your plates unlabeled!
Without a bill on GMO labeling, you'll continue to be left in the dark as you make choices to feed yourself and your family. With GMO salmon and a flood of new GMO crops waiting to be approved, the issue couldn’t be more urgent.
It’s time to end the 20 year old politically engineered loophole that has denied Americans their basic right to know what’s in their food.
You can help change that today! Mothers, farmers and activists across Washington have been working hard for the past several years trying to introduce reasonable legislation that would give this basic information to consumers about their food.
Make your voice heard today: You and your family have a Right to Know!
Remember, democracy is like a muscle... either use it or lose it!
Thanks for participating in food democracy,
