Today state Representatives Phil Miller (D) Chester and Diana Urban (D) Stonington are standing alongside Connecticut mothers and activists at the state capital in Hartford to introduce a bill to label genetically engineered foods in Connecticut. This is exciting, but we need your help to make sure it passes!
Already citizens in 62 other countries enjoy the basic right of knowing if their food has been genetically engineered in a laboratory. But for the past 20 years Americans have been denied this democratic right because of powerful special interests of Big Food, the biotech industry and agribusiness lobbyists.
You can help change that today! Activists across Connecticut have been working hard for the past several years trying to introduce reasonable legislation that would give this basic information to consumers about their food.
Click here if you think you have a Right to Know what’s in your food! Join Food Democracy Now! in telling your elected officials that you care about GMO labeling and want to see them act immediately to pass this bill into law. Every voice counts!
There is not even a bill number yet, and already the opposition is working behind the scenes to kill the GMO labeling bill in Connecticut, because they don’t think that you or your family deserve the right to know what’s in your food.
If passed, Connecticut would become the first state in the U.S. to require mandatory labeling of GMOs in our food. The issue of labeling has never been more important!
Passing GMO labeling in Connecticut is urgent.
Right now 13 new GMO crops are awaiting approval at the USDA, including 2,4-D Agent Orange corn and the “Botox” GMO apple.
At the same time, the FDA is getting ready to approve genetically engineered salmon. If approved, AquaBounty’s GMO salmon would be the first genetically engineered animal allowed on the market and it would appear on your plates unlabeled! Without this a bill on GMO labeling, you will continue to be left in the dark as you try to feed yourself and your family.
Besides eating organic food, the only way to guarantee that you’re not eating GMOs or feeding your family genetically engineered foods is to make sure they’re properly labeled. Join us today to gain that right for you, your family and everyone in Connecticut.
Currently 37 states are working to pass GMO labeling legislation in 2013. Connecticut is one of those states and with your help, we can make history.
Remember, democracy is like a muscle... either use or lose it!
Thanks for participating in food democracy,
