Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, whose district includes part of Shelton, said she supports the call of Tom Colicchio and over 700 other chefs for passage of the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act.

Colicchio is best known for his role as a judge on the reality TV show “Top Chef” and for his role as a founder or chef as some prominent New York City restaurants.

DeLauro is a co-sponsor of the legislation, which would require genetically engineered food to be clearly labeled.

“Consumers have a right to know the facts about the foods they buy, so they can better make healthy and informed choices,” said DeLauro, a Democrat about to begin her 13th term. “The Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act would ensure that foods that have been genetically engineered, or have ingredients that are genetically engineered, are adequately labeled.”

Americans want to know

She said people want to know what they are eating, and having better informed consumers is a plus.

“However you feel about genetically modified or engineered food, families should have the opportunity to know what is in the food they are buying and where it came from,” she said.

“Americans have a right to know, and the marketplace works better when consumers can make more informed choices,” DeLauro said. “Over 90% of Americans agree. We should listen to our constituents and pass this legislation without further delay.”

Shelton has two congressional districts

DeLauro represents the Third Congressional District, which includes a part of Shelton and most of the greater New Haven region. She lives in New Haven.

Most of Shelton is in the Fourth Congressional District, represented by Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Himes of Greenwich. Himes was just re-elected to a fourth term  in the district that includes most of Fairfield County.
