Now that the patent on Roundup has expired, Monsanto is off on a new quest to maximize its profits while genetically modifying the world’s food supply. The new approach is a pesticide that operates to inhibit key genes in insects at the RNA level. Existing GMO can withstand highly toxic pesticides that kill other plants and insects, or plants that have bacteria inserted into the plant that kill the pests that attempt to eat the plants. The World Health Organization has declared that glyphosate, the key ingredient in Roundup, is probably carcinogenic to humans. The US EPA and USDA permit Roundup to be used, and insist that it is safe for limited human consumption.

Joe Mercola, MD issued an article on Sept. 8, 2015 titled Pesticides Increasingly Threaten Human Health. Mercola’s article goes beyond the dangers of current pesticides used on GMO crops to include efforts by Monsanto, Syngenta, DuPont and Dow to force retractions of articles that negatively report the effects of GMOs on human and animal health, and the residual chemicals found in the farmland and water supplies.

One of Mercola’s sources is an article published in Mother Jones by Tom Philpott on Aug. 19, 2015. The article is titled New Monsanto Spray Kills Bugs by Messing With Their Genes. The article describes how the RNA insecticides (RNAi) were developed and how they work. Monsanto has a target to release its first RNAi product to combat the Colorado potato beetle about 2020. Monsanto has successfully lobbied the FDA and USDA to increase the allowable level of residual glyphosate from Roundup by a factor of 30.

Because RNAi effects on humans and feed animals are not understood, government agencies in the US are already trying to determine how to test the safety of RNAi pesticides. There are considerations of how the RNAi gene alterations could mutate the insects in a manner similar to how plants mutated to overcome the effects of Roundup and similar products. Plant mutations created super weeds that have previously banned herbicides re-certified to combat these super weeds. The possibilities of RNAi creating super bugs or mutating genes in humans and animals to cause cancers and major health risks are being considered.

A major portion of Mercola’s article is focused on the huge lobbying and advertising efforts of the chemical companies and the grocery associations to attempt to get a federal law to prevent states and municipalities from requiring food labeling for GMO content. We have a right to know what we are eating, and we have the right to require the FDA, EPA and USDA to protect us from chemicals and genetic damage through GMO products and RNAi pesticides.
